MOVEMENT QUALITY-INVOLUNTARY MOVEMENTS

Exploring the movements behind the staircase handrail in a still camera. The handrail is used to set up as a frame for recording the movements. The camera has taken each different shots of moving gaze in the same frame. The photos are then ordered into a filmic sequence. The result is a static world traversed by a moving gaze. It is the rhythm, the looping, loping rhythm. It is knowing that every walk is the same, yet every walk is unique. In fact, every step is unique. By understand that "it is a performance entirely for us"- Eadweard Muybridge. This exploration consists of time, space, movement and stillness.

Movement quality: What We Do

INVULUNTARY MOVEMENT

This is the film of 2 different persons who walking up the stair. They both show the same movement of walking up the stair yet they took different duration in each step. Involuntary movement is unintentional and unnoticeable. when the duration of a person is longer than the other person, the involuntary movement is also moving further. It is interesting that we all have this movement within ourselves and perform as we moved.

INVULUNTARY MOVEMENT

This is the film of 2 different persons who running up the stair. They both show the same movement of running up the stair yet they took different duration in each step.
Why running and walking have different sound?
Does it relate to the involuntary movement?

DESIGN EXPERIMENT - MOVEMENT ON THE STAIRCASE

How to slow down people movement? How to get everyone to move in the same direction?
I am sticking a sign of moving up the staircase for people to follow. This is a suggestive movement. When they see the sign, they feel a sense of journey of moving.

DESIGN EXPERIMENT - MOVEMENT ON THE STAIRCASE

How to make the movement smooth? How to prevent them from falling and skipping the stair?
I design a rubber apparatus for people to wear when walking up the stair. This is stretchy. Even they step in it while walking, they won’t fall. The furthest step of people can skip 1 step as it has it stretch limit. This help people balance their movements within each step.
